Traditionally, I find my birthday awkward and need to be consoled throughout; this year was no exception.
At least I got to spend the day with wonderful people willing to put up with my penchant for photography.
Anyway, this post is an excuse to show off some gorgeous original type set at The Arm, the
Williamsburg letterpress workshop.

My oracle of all things current @thegiftd sent me a link to the awesome blog My Mom the Style Icon a while back. It mashes vintage photos with sparkling commentary by the peerless Piper Weiss (excellent name, Piper–it’s short, cute and trills off the tongue). Mum’s extremely photogenic and she has fantastic photos from her teens and her wedding day. Lo and behold, Piper asked if she could submit Mum’s photos to New York Magazine Weddings for publication.

Flora, as drawn on the train from Edinburgh Waverly to Kings Cross London last time I was back in the UK. My train was delayed and by happy coincidence I got to share the ride with Flora and Tom to Doncaster. We talked about meeting up in New York and it came together last week when we met and had dinner in Brooklyn.
The Return of the Native

Love this cover, especially the fuchsia patterning of the Washington Square Press logo on the back.
THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE has been rightly called “a work of genius.” Set in the vast, brooding heathlands of England, it lays bare the frailties of human love, its warmth and self-sacrifice, its cruelty and unreasoned passions. Here is one of the truly great novels of the English language.

On the left is a drawing of Elspeth, standing sassily with hand on hip, waving and saying, “Hi Eviepops.”
On the right, our whole traveling company are seated on a boat in Borneo on our way to see fireflies.
Ally, Els, Mummy, Evie and Li Nah are all cosily depicted in the moonlight. On top is a monkey saying “Oooo.”

Self-portrait by the artist.

Jonny and I went to a Halloween party in Brooklyn a couple of years ago. We left the costume design until the last minute and the result was this grocery-bag-and-Sharpie solution.

Back in the day, I used to make comics instead of just reading them obsessively.
Project 365: A Photograph a Day for a Year

The aim of Project 365 is to take a photo a day for a year, hopefully picking up some interesting images along the way and creating a visual record of incidental moments in life. I’m learning a lot about my old point-and-shoot camera.

My sister Ally and I spent a few days in Holland visiting our grandfather and I got a bit of sketching done while we were traveling. Funnily enough, this isn’t really much of a likeness of Ally; if anything, it looks more like me.
